Black Power Story Hour! is a gathering for Black children, parents and caregivers to grow and share in the joy of Black literature
Hey family! LOVING ROOM: diaspora books + salon is so energized and grateful to present the Black Power Story Hour! a gathering for Black children, parents and caregivers to grow and share in the joy of Black literature. Reading together as community, we bring Black-authored children’s books to life, and integrate the messages in our narratives through movement, music, group reflection, and more.
Space is limited. Please register in advance!
Our featured read for Black History Month / Black Futures Month is “Hold Them Close: A Love Letter to Black Children” by Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow, illustrated by Patrick Dougher with photography by Jamel Shabazz, published by Harper-Collins. “Hold Them Close encourages young children to hold close their joy, the words of their ancestors and elders, as well as their power to change the world.” Copies of the book will be available for purchase in-store, and we are working to procure give away copies as well— please stay tuned for updates. The book can also be purchased online any time through our Bookshop.
Black Power Story Hour! is a monthly gathering that meets second Saturdays (February 11, March 11, April 8, May 13, June 10). This program exists free of charge thanks to funding from the City of Seattle Office of Arts & Culture.
If you are interested in participating with a special offering (reading to young people, leading an aligned activity, etc.) please email lovingroombooks@gmail.com.
Blessings + gratitude!
