Imagine being pulled over for snow on your license plate after dropping your children off at school and then never coming home again. Imagine being held in a detention center for months due to a clerical error in your asylum application but not having the financial resources to hire a lawyer to plead your case. Imagine having an immigration attorney who demands thousands of dollars in payment and then disappears after you wire the funds. Imagine sitting in a detention cell in another state while your family struggles to make ends meet during a pandemic. Many of our local families don’t have to imagine this. They are living it.
National and local policies and procedures that disproportionately affect our immigrant friends and neighbors are a mandate for us in the Wood River Valley to better support Latino/LatinX/Hispanic members of our community. The Alliance of Idaho has responded to that mandate with bold, community-building, justice-seeking action.
We provide access to low cost and no cost ethical, excellent legal support. We also help bridge the “trust gap” that impacts people’s willingness to engage the robust services available in our valley. And we work to dismantle impediments to civic engagement and human flourishing.
