Summary: Thistle Theatre is a professional puppet theatre for families.

Thistle Theatre, based in Seattle, is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating unique and diverse puppet theatre productions for the entire family. Founded in 1991, by Jean Enticknap, Thistle Theatre is the only puppet theatre in the Pacific Northwest that specializes in a distinctive variation of Bunraku, an ancient style of puppetry from Japan. Beautifully hand-crafted puppets come to life in original productions and adaptations of folk tales from around the world. Dressed all in black, two or three puppeteers work together to operate one puppet emphasizing the realistic movement and emotion of the character, the primary characteristic of Bunraku puppetry.

The diversity of the theatre’s repertoire represents our commitment to providing a range of social and cultural works that both educate and offer rich entertainment. We currently have 25 shows that include traditional and contemporary fairy and folk stories from around the world including Africa, Denmark, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Russia, UK and the USA. Created with careful attention to historical accuracy, each show features hand built puppets, colorful costumes, original music and creative sets.
