Our fundamental goal – help members of this community become fully functional, well-integrated part of the society in every aspect of their life in this country: education, employment, health and wellness, social services, business development, career growth, legal assistance, etc. while preserving their cultural heritage.
Students in our programs study the languages and cultures of Russia, Central and Eastern Europe, and the former Soviet Union in a global context. They develop an exceptional understanding of a complex region recognized for its international influence.
Slavic Oregon Social Services (formerly ROSS) was established by Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon (EMO) in 1994 to serve the needs of Slavic-speaking refugees and immigrants. More than 100,000 Slavic-speaking refugees and immigrants from the former Soviet Union currently reside in the Portland metro area, and the numbers are expected to increase. Census figures show that no other place in the nation has had more of an influx from the former Soviet Union than the Pacific Northwest. Oregon is number two in the nation for Slavic-speaking newcomers.
VOLYA (Freedom in Belarusian) is a Belarusian folk group based in Seattle, Washington (USA). It was created in 2009 with the mission of introducing the people of the Pacific Northwest to the beauty and richness of Belarusian folklore. The group’s repertoire consists of traditional songs from different regions of Belarus, with a particular emphasis on ancient Belarusian songs, many with roots in pre-Christian and Medieval times, which performed in authentic style.
