The origins of the Euskal Etxea (Basque Center) of Seattle take us back to 1993, when the first gatherings and meetings were held in Monroe. After those first steps, the club officially incorporated in 1997, and joined NABO.
The annual Silverton Christmas Market aims to focus on its German heritage and gathers inspiration from authentic German Christmas Markets, with collectible mugs; traditional lebkuchen (gingerbread hearts) and gluhwein (mulled wine); artisan vendors; a booth selling imported handcrafted German nutcrackers, smokers and ornaments; and a light section dedicated to Krampus – the wicked German counterpart to St. Nicholas.
Our department concentrates on the artistic and intellectual traditions of German-speaking countries and offers training in critical reading, analytical writing, and the implications of language, literature, and other media as cultural phenomena. As one of the highest ranked programs in the country, we remain at the forefront of innovating language teaching. We offer undergraduate and advanced degrees for students at the University of Washington, as well as outreach events for the surrounding community.
The study of French and Italian language and culture is more important than ever. Italy and France are core members of the European Union and important players in the global economy. French is spoken daily by an estimated 220 million native speakers worldwide and is an official language in 29 countries across five continents. Italian ranks sixth among all languages studied in the US, while French ranks second. Both languages open up many doors to students interested in international careers.
