Caribbean

Composer, multi-instrumentalist and singer, Chavez’s group repertoire includes bolero, pasillo, cueca, joropo, cumbia, son, goajira, Andean music, merengue, and calixso as well as popular ballads. An educator and cultural ambassador, Chavez was previously Folk Troubadour and Professor at the National University of Panama.
The award-winning Latin music duo, Correo Aereo, play traditional multi-instrumental acoustics and vocals of music from Latin America, with a focus on music from Venezuela, Mexico, Argentina, Peru and Cuba. They incorporate original songs and arrangements into their performances that are deeply inspired by swimming and playing in the ancient rivers of traditions while being alive and open to organic innovation. Dr. Juan Tony Guzman, Head of the Jazz Dept. at Luther College writes: “Listening to their performance one can unite space and time across cultures.”
In 1977 a group of students of Mexican ancestry who identified as Chicana/os in recognition of their unique social, cultural and political identities joined forces with a Chicano Art Professor, Rubén Trejo, to establish the Chicano Education Program. Since its creation, this program has served as an academic and community center for students and their families. Today, the Chicana/o/x Studies Program, as is known, provides services for students of all backgrounds: Chicanx, Indigenous, Hispanic, Latinx, immigrant, migrant, Caribbean, Central American, South American, non-Latinx, and beyond. Our program offers academic and non-academic support services both in English and Spanish, such as advising, peer mentorship, and tutoring opportunities, culturally relevant events, scholarship information, and a home away from home. Founded in 2010, eSe Teatro honors self-definition and inclusion, striving to represent all the colors in the “rainbow of brown” of our Latinidad. Las Molas Association is a non-profit Organization. Our purpose is to preserve, promote, enhance, and increase conscience of Panamá culture, to aid and assist Panamanians and other individuals in the State of Washington, and in our Homeland of Panamá.
