The Scandinavian Hour, a community staple for over a half a century in Seattle, is currently heard on KKNW 1150 on the AM dial. Tune in Saturday mornings to hear Scandinavian community news, information, and of course music! Accordion, fiddle, and dance music from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, and even the Faroe Islands is regularly featured with modern music and banter. Join us!
In autumn of 1994, the University of Washington Scandinavian Department, with support from the Center for Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies, began teaching the languages of the three Baltic States, Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian at multiple levels. Language instruction is at the core of the growing Program in Baltic Studies. This program is also developing in other areas. Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian materials are included in numerous courses. Prominent speakers on Baltic topics are regularly brought to the University for guest lectures and consultation with faculty and students. Outstanding students receive financial support for exchanges to Baltic universities.
Officially founded in 1982, the West Coast Latvian Education Center (WCLEC), or, as it is known in Latvian, the Rietumkrasta Latviešu Izglītības Centrs (RKLIC), is an educational and cultural nonprofit. The West Coast Latvian Education Center’s purpose, and its mission, is to foster, promote, and organize educational and cultural events for all individuals of Latvian ancestry or affinity. It is in Shelton, Washington, in our home nestled in the woods, that the West Coast Latvian Education Center strives to give voice to our rich culture and traditions.
