As the second-oldest civil rights organization in the state of Washington, ULMS is one of the region’s essential economic first responders, helping families cope with challenges through a variety of programs designed to support and encourage self-sufficiency in all aspects of life. ULMS also serves as a liaison between community members, local businesses, city and county government, and other service based organizations that share our concern for the welfare of the Black community and other disadvantaged residents in the Greater Puget Sound area.
United Territories of Pacific Islanders Alliance – Portland Chapter is a non profit run by and for Queer and Trans Pacific Islanders (QTPIs) established in 2017. We organize to heal through the love for our culture and the love for our people.
United Territories of Pacific Islanders Alliance (UTOPIA) is a queer and trans people of color-led, grassroots organization born out of the struggles, challenges, strength, and resilience of the Queer and Trans Pacific Islander (QTPI – “Q-T-pie”) community in South King County.
UTSAV is a platform to connect South Asians living in the Pacific Northwest with local communities while developing and empowering civic leaders to serve & support a wide range of youth, adult & family needs.
Registered in 2003, Uttoron is an IRS 501(C)(3) non-profit organization of People of Bengal based in Greater Seattle area of Northwest USA. The word “Uttoron” means “UPLIFTMENT”. Uttoron undertakes and promotes social /cultural events unique to Bengal and India. It’s activities supports the uniqueness of the diverse US cultural canvas and help build a bridge between the east and the west. Uttoron’s activities spans adjacent cities like Bellevue, Redmond, Issaquah, Sammamish, Everett, Tacoma and Olympia and currently enjoy the participation of Bengalis coming from various regions of India and Bangladesh.
UW Awaaz is a South-Asian fusion a cappella group which takes songs from South-Asian and Western culture and creates harmonious arrangements of all varieties. Founded in 2009 by UW alumni Joyita Banerjee and Pratyusha Banik, Awaaz has followed in the tradition of other South-Asian a cappella groups while continuing to innovate the genre by incorporating elements from different cultures and media. From classic Bollywood hits by A.R. Rahman to popular American songs from different genres, we aim to cultivate fusions that provoke emotions of joy and nostalgia, while appealing to audiences of all musical backgrounds!
In autumn of 1994, the University of Washington Scandinavian Department, with support from the Center for Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies, began teaching the languages of the three Baltic States, Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian at multiple levels. Language instruction is at the core of the growing Program in Baltic Studies. This program is also developing in other areas. Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian materials are included in numerous courses. Prominent speakers on Baltic topics are regularly brought to the University for guest lectures and consultation with faculty and students. Outstanding students receive financial support for exchanges to Baltic universities.
The Center offers a major, minor and International Studies Track in Canadian Studies; a minor in Arctic Studies; Foreign Language and Area Studies fellowships and a professional development program for graduate students; an affiliated faculty program; and a K-12 teacher associate program. The Center also offers public programming to increase knowledge and understanding of Canada, the Canada-U.S. relationship and Canada’s role in the world.
