Center for Indigenous Midwifery was founded by Rhonda Lee Grantham, an Indigenous Midwife and Herbalist from the Cowlitz Nation. Cowlitz people are a Salish-Sahaptian tribe of SW Washington that translates to “Seeker of the Medicine Spirit.” For over two decades, Rhonda has been actively catching babies and supporting programs within tribal communities, both at home and globally. Rhonda also founded the Canoe Journey Herbalists Project, and when leading both, is guided by her lens as a cultural anthropologist and Native woman; in addition to her passions for global health, family wellness, and culturally-centered care.

Chachalu Tribal Museum & Cultural Center

Chachalu tells the story of the Tribes and Bands of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon and honor our Elders who kept Tribal traditions and dreams alive during the years of Termination. It is a center where the Tribe’s Restoration is celebrated and our culture is being revitalized. The Yamhill Kalapuya people called this place Chachalu, which translates to “place of the burnt timbers”; a massive forest fire burned through the Grand Ronde Valley shortly before the time of Relocation in 1856. This vision of the Museum is to tell the story of the resiliency of the land and of the people who have lived here since time immemorial. The land, once devastated by fire, is now revitalized with healthy forests and abundant wildlife. Our salmon have once again returned to our streams; the Grand Ronde people, once uprooted from their various homelands and then Terminated by the federal government, are renewed through Restoration. This is a center for cultural activity where the Tribe’s stories, history, and culture continue to be practiced and shared.

Community Focus: Indigenous American

I have been fortunate. As a native woman my mother cleaned houses and hospital room into her 70s, my father, a WWII Navy vetern, tended bar, dying young of a stroke. They made it possible for me to have a culture, a determination, and a foothold in life. I am a Spokane, an artist, a mother, a grandmother, a wife, an activist for native rights, a college graduate, an academic Dean, a professor, a speaker, a voice, an American Indian, a human being. I live today. Holding an Associates degree in Fine Art from The Institute of American Indian Arts, Bachelors in Fine Art from The College of Santa Fe, Masters of Fine Art from the University of Illinois and an Honorary Doctorate in Fine Art from Mitchell College, New London Connecticut. My art, lecturing and teaching has centered around achieving a national shift in the perception of native people. All too often we are still seen as objects or as a people trapped in the past-tense. We are twenty first century people, and must be seen as such in order to deal with the serious issues that face us today. Yet, even in the aftermath of a momentous civil rights movement we are invisible under the weight of “mythology.” Our Native Students need to be recognized so that they can contribute to the larger community.
